It's been doing the rounds with the usual suspects for a while, but this Chase & Status remix of Top Cat's classic "Ruffest Gunark" is making my face screw in all the right places at the moment. Retaining the mid 90s junglist vibe, but giving it a 2009 update with their trademark floaty wobbly bass thing (which you know will sound rude on a big system) this is the standout cut from the new Champion Deejay remix album.

what's up fam, it has been a while!
today i want to inform you about two things.

Ill Distracxion Reissue

after the ill distracxion special back in june, pliz wrote several messages in the comments section about a reissue they would do. there was also a paypal-button on his myspace page involved. some people already paid and did not hear any news afterwards. i received emails concerning this problem on a daily basis. i fully understood, i mean, i hosted those promises on my page. but after several emails with pliz a few months ago, i never got confirmation of a pressing or release date. also, my last emails never got answered. so, i just wanted to tell you guys that i'm officially taking my hands off this whole project. don't get me wrong- i'd love to see the promised 12" happen, but i just can't take the responsibility for this for my readers. but please keep me informed, if there is a movement in the process.

If Deejay Was Your Trade...

I don't really want this blog to be about uploading full albums of other people's music, but couldn't really resist with this one (and it's long since deleted). Probably one of my all time favourite compilations, this was the very first release on the sadly defunct Blood 'n' Fire label back in 1994. Pretty much everything the label re-issued was gold, but this collection of mid 70's dubs all touched by the hand of King Tubby, produced by Bunny 'Striker' Lee and played by The Aggrovators, really stands out for me. With toasts from Dr Alimentado, Tappa Zukie, Prince Jazzbo and I Roy amongst others on classic riddims such as 'Ali Baba', ' The Beatitude' and "Jah Is My Guiding Star', you'll be very hard pushed to find a better example of how much reggae and deejay/soundsystem culture influence early hip hop.

Following Tony Midget's Firm Jean offering below, I decided it was time to let this out of the bag also. Knocked up in the hours after MJs death (I had a gig in the following night and knew I'd have to play some), it's really cheesy but might come in handy if you're spinning anywhere over the festive period and get the dreaded drunken request. At almost 7 minutes it also gives you the perfect opportunity to moonwalk yo ass to the bar and get a refill. Heeeheeeeee!

Cause For Alarm

This Thursday 26th November brings Noid's original big bad wolves, The Heavy, back for another show in London, this time for the Soundcrash crew, at the Relentless Garage in Highbury.

Two albums deep on Ninja Tunes sister label, Counter Records, these boys have been steadily smashing up live venues & festivals across the States & Europe, and had numerous TV & Radio appearances, gaining nuff loyal fans daily.

Support on the night comes from several bands and the man like DJ BobaFatt.

Monkey Business

Just in from our buddies over on the West Coast, this jokes rendition of TC's dubstep classic "Where's My Money (Caspa remix)" has brightened up the NICE UP! inbox this morning. Knocked together by Good Groove's very own Parker, it features vocals not only by a certain king of the swingers, but also Parker's long time sparring partner and mixtape don-dada DJ Moneyshot. Chimp-step anyone?

#1 Sound

Been bumpin this tune for a while now and it always drops heavy, so I thought I'd share it on here. As you will hear it's a dubstep reworking of the Junior Murvin/Lee Perry classic "Police & Thieves" riddim. Updated by producers Kion & Murda, the 12" also features a heavier version from Finish producer Tes La Rok. It's simple and obvious, but never fails to nice up the dance. A quick look at the labels myspace suggests there's plenty releases more coming too, which is good new.

over two years ago we had the slum brothers special up and were questioning if the solo record by a guy called reggie reg was by the same reggie reg known from the slum brothers crew. some time later handjob informed me that it was a different mc spittin on there. actually an mc of the crash crew fam.

so here i come with a little nugget called the real hip hop. pressed up in '96 on mind bending music, which also released a few chris styles 12"s. the crash crew debuted in '82 and consisted of reggie reg, barry b-stro, g-man, shubee, ek mike c and dj darryl c (rip). on this mid 90ies indy comeback you'll get 'em all back on the mic. even dj darryl c has his lines. additionally you'll hear an uncredited female emcee.

i really feel this record and advise you to keep your eyes open! other than most other pictures on the net, my copy is purple and not blue. i'm not sure about which pressing came first. maybe we should compare the run-out-grooves!

Can't Tek No More

Easily the best track off of Dizzee Rascal's "Tongue 'n' Cheek" album, is this Shy FX produced track, featuring another British institution, Mr Brinsley Forde of Aswad / Babylon fame.

Here's some footage from Dizzee's recent show for the BBC Electric Proms, at Camden's Roundhouse. Brinsley will be appearing with the NICE UP! Soundsystem & the mighty mighty WAILERS at the Jazz Cafe, in a few weeks time (More details of that below this post).

Major Sample

Been loving this riddim since the Major Lazer album dropped earlier in the year, and Mr Vegas & Jovi Rockwell smash the arse out of it. It's been bugging me what the original sample is from as it definitely rang a bell, but a quick bit of internet detective work revealed it's a track used on the rather amazing Diplo & Santogold's Top Ranking mixtape from 08 - Nora Dean's "Barb Wire/Oh Mama" cut on the Techniques "You Don't Care" riddim...aaaahhhhnnd relax.
