RIP The Cool Ruler

Sad news reached us yesterday of the passing of one of reggae's true greats, the inimitable Gregory Isaacs. With tributes and eulogies popping up in every corner of the internet, it felt only right to post something here. I was lucky enough to catch the man perform a number of times, most recently at the Big Chill festival. With a back catalogue as rich as you'd expect from someone who has over 50 years of archive material, his performances were always ones to treasure. My enduring memory of his legacy however is probably his most well known tune. Having ran a monthly event for 7 years, it was a familiar experience to get the old "last tune, mate" off an over-zealous bouncer, eager to get paid and get home. One particular bouncer was a sucker for a bit of reggae, in particular Mr Isaacs himself...so whilst he was ushering the crowd out of the door, I'd always slyly drop "Night Nurse". He could never resist abandoning his post and having a skank on the dancefloor with the remaining stragglers. This happened every night for around 18 months. A fitting tribute to the power of the man's music I feel! As a blog post though, I've opted for a personal favourite (sorry Bayo!)...RIP

Seiji Fix

We're big fan of Seiji over here, ever since his early days on Reinforced to his broken beat bangers (also as part of Bugz In The Attic) he's always been a bit of a musical misfit, operating on the fringes of the mainstream, but always delivering on the dancefloor. Thesedays he's pumping out heavy bassline infused house and what is probably described as "UK Funky". What's more he gives a hell of a lot of it away for free on his website! This particular track "Dope Fix" is a sparse tribal work out, given away at the XLRBR blog, where you can find all manner of free goodness!

Undeniable

I heard this a couple of weeks back when Terror Danjah guested on Scratcha's Grimey Breakfast show on Rinse FM. Dropping a whole load of exclusives from his forthcoming album on Hyperdub, this tune really stood out. Featuring the omnipresent D Double E, its got a real crossover feel - gonna be getting rewinds for days this one. Only a 192 for now, so keep your eyes peeled for the album drop on the 1st November.

Soundclash!

Following last weeks monumental Culture Clash at London's Roundhouse (check this video of Shy FX murdering Skream & Benga with his own dubplate of "On A Mission") we've got our own little soundclash going on this week. They say great minds think alike, so when myself and Mr Benn got chatting about some old mash-ups we've got sitting on the shelf we realised we'd both made tunes using Arrested Development's "Everyday People". We thought we'd go head-to-head, stick them up here and let you be the judge! Let us know your winner in the comments below...

jerry g

i have to dedicate this one to my man madkid- he posted one track of this twelve inch a while ago on youtube.

i'm talking about a rapper called jerry g. i didn't know him before- but i understand that he comes from the same corner as hi-fidel & dj crucial on f5 records from st. louis. i'm pretty sure most of you guys at least heard of them before.

this nice record is from 2002. two of the three tracks were produced by dj crucial while the third one was done by keanutis smith.

Dem A Call Us Pirates!

I was recently asked to put together a 25 minute mix of hip hop and reggae for FBI Radio in Sydney (big up to the man like Shantan!), You can check the broadcast below, along with me waffling endless rubbish and an interview with Mister Lova Lova himself, Shaggy. During the show Mr Boombastic also drops some wicked freestyles on a bunch of classic riddims, showing he still reps on the mic. I've uploaded the raw mix to my mixcloud, along with a download of it. Plenty of exclusives, classics and new shit - check it out!

[instrumentals] timeless / germany

our second presenter in the beats section is corccey aka timeless beats from germany. i stumbled across his beats on his youtube channel a while ago.

«My name is "Timeless". I come from germany & I'm 18 years old. I started makin beats back in summer 2008 at the age of 16.

I chose the name Timeless because True School hip hop what other people call underground hip hop today is timeless. I mean there are tons of true school albums that people still remember til today. I've been listening to hip hop since '99 and since then it became pretty much the leading thing in my life. My inspiration comes from countless producers (Pete Rock, DJ Premier, 9th Wonder & Large P just to name a few of them).

I don't use a MPC. Just like "Bugseed" i use FL Studio 8 and i'm completely happy with it. In the beginning i've kept my production pretty much simple, but after a long time makin beats my style of makin beats became more & more advanced.

The reason why hip hop is so important to me is that it helped me going through tough times and made me express myself with my beats. Makin music was one of the reasons why i never started smokin' or drinkin'... to keep my head clean for new ideas.»

cannabis

one more unrevealed record from the darkside mix– cannabis with their '94 twelve inch «represent no question»

all i see is they are from connecticut and go by the names kaseem, craig & frog. this was put out on linda records and together they represent the ghetto link production. the freestyle version is where it's at, the street mix is more a different instrumental-theme.
