[hanDJob talks to] t.r.o.o.k.u.l.a. of brainwash 2000

oh my god, last post for this year! and how could we better end 2010 than with an interview with troo kula of the brainwash 2000 fame!?

seriously guys, everybody is or at least was after their 12"s. it took me years to get ahold of the «break it down» 12"! and even though everybody was aware of brainwash, you never heard anything about them. well, my man hanDJob came here today to change that fact. with the help of the tru comers [big shout out!] he tracked down t.r.o.o.k.u.l.a. for an interesting interview!

as usual we were also able to score some exclusive unheard material. in this case troo kula blesses us with three past funk & dues joints.

«Troo Kula:  First let me say Peace to you and all the real Hip Hop fans all around the world and thank you for this opportunity. T.R.O.O.K.U.L.A. stands for The Root Often Oversees with Knowledge Understanding Love and Acceptance. ..»

as already mentioned, we have 3 unheard joints for you ready. my winner here is «what you think».

1. WHAT YOU THINK
2. GAME
3. ON E

big up to troo kula for taking the time and sharing some history! and now go and read the interview!

happy new year folks and make sure you hit our spot in 2011 as well!

Jstar Digs Music

Jstardigsmusic#1 by Jstar on Mixcloud

No rhyme or reason, no fuss no worry, just starting to put out these JstarDigsMusic mixshows of all styles via the fantastic mixcloud. Starting where one should, naturally, with the roots....

Rub Up, Push Up & Pull Up

I'm promoting a gig with the legendary DJ Derek in a few weeks (big up to Steve for the wicked flyer!), so thought I'd put a bit of a mix of some of my favourite ska, bluebeat and rocksteady tunes together. It's a style of music I fell in love with when I first started to get deeply into reggae as you can directly hear the transformation of the rhythms, bass and obviously tempo, into what we know and love as modern reggae. There's so much of it out there it was really hard deciding what tunes to leave out, so I've stuck to personal favourites and the classics, hopefully without being too obvious or "Now That's What I Call Ska"!! Enjoy...

New from our brethren at Reggae Roast is this brand-spanking 7" from Ghetto Priest. As always, the quality is high from this label, already getting spins from Rodigan and featuring some great remixes from Richie Phoe and Rack'n'Ruin. You can listen to and buy the whole package here, and they're also giving away plenty of freebies via their soundcloud page below. Make sure you hit up their regular dance if you're in London town too - always good vibes!

Jstar & Honey Brown in Vienna Part 2!

Thanks for all the wicked feedback on our Vienna escapade, and due to the many of you requesting the last bit of the JSTAR set, it's now posted on soundcloud!
Dont forget the Nice Up will be hosting our xmas party with Turntable Dubbers and DJ Shepdog at London's Jazz Cafe on Dec 3 2010!

Dutty House

I've been buying and playing a lot of this stuff for a while, but never got round to putting a mix together so here goes! I'm not sure terms such as "Crack House" or "Funky Bashment" sit too well with me and "UK Funky" just sounds terrible, so I've gone with "Dutty House". House that is, well...dutty. Featuring tracks by DJ Zinc, Toddla T, Seiji and Warrior One alongside a couple of my cheeky mash-ups and a couple of classics. Enjoy!

As a bonus, I've also re-upped my 2 bootlegs used on this mix...

[instrumentals] kick back / canada

i have another great instrumental package for you guys today! we're heading over to canada, where kick back blesses us with 12 joints. i found his youtube-channel a while back- and i was amazed by his works!

«I'm a 26 year old Hip Hop Head/producer from Edmonton, Canada. I dig through crates of soul, jazz, funk, and library music, mostly from the 60's and 70's. My style can be hardcore, smooth, and hypnotic. I prefer to put a 90's feel on all my joints, because i grew up listening to boom bap, its the only sound i can relate to. I have such a deep love for Hip Hop, my mind will never be tainted or brainwashed by mainstream music, as i plan on making the same, 90s style beats, for decades to come.

Influences:

Reggie Noble, Pete Rock, Grap Luva, Nick Wiz, Buckwild, DJ Premier, Guru(RIP), K Def, Damu The Fudgemunk, Easy Mo Bee, Xtra P, Fredro Starr(Onyx), Roc Raida(RIP), Lord Finesse, & Showbiz, The Artifacts, Redman, K Banger, Miilkbone,
Da Youngstas, Illegal, Das EFX, Cella Dwellas, Kardinal Offishall, Cipher, Down 2 Erf, Da Grassroots, MOP, Lost Boyz, Onyx.

What I currently use:

Numark TTUSB (USB Turntable), Audacity, FL Studio 7»

i also have to mention a collabo he made earlier this year with k-banger, which is also dope- particularly for 2010!

k banger - ode to new york (kick back production/2010)

«K Banger is an emcee from New Jersey, who is currently signed to the label 45 Scientific. He was involved with music at an early age, and Hip Hop throughout the 90's. K has been affiliated with Miilkbone and Nick Wiz, as well as Scienz of Life in the past, and present. He was also featured on one of the illest joints from the mid 90's...

«Dirty Delaney» - Miilkbone ft K Banger (Produced by Nick Wiz)

This is how I found out about K Banger...Although it never made Miilkbone's 95' LP "Da Miilkrate", it was finally released on "Nick Wiz - Cellar Sounds vol 1", in 2008. I contacted K Banger on youtube early 2010, and offered up some beats. We've only released one single, "Ode To New York", that was recorded in 2010. We are currently working on a few joints for his upcoming LP in 2011, and an LP of our own for late 2011."

K Banger has 2 previous albums:

Stillborn Lives - released in 2002 through Dirt Department, Inc. &
Truth Be Told -  released in 2007 through Shaman Work Recordings. Both can be purchased online or on iTunes.»

Ante Sensi

Hip Hop tracks don't come much bigger than MOP's Ante up, so when Mr Blennd got his hands on the instrumental we knew there was gonna be trouble. Spliced and diced with the classic reworking of under mi sensi, this is pure dancefloor dynamite. Blennd has decided to give it away for free too, so got grab it and bump it loud, be it in the disco, in your whip or on your sketeboard, wherever...

Guinness Punch

We've been banging on about this release since we first posted a snippet some time back...so here it is in it's fully downloadable glory. Shy FX doing an old time reggae refix on his latest tune "Raver" featuring Kano, Donae'o & Roses Gabor. Just like the drink it is dark, tasty, intoxicating and makes you want to get dutty. It reminds me of late nights in a Harlesden Jerk shop sipping on a few punches whilst some OAPs get down to bashment...

Warbox Space Program

We've just decoded an incoming signal from our good friend Ashley Beedle with his latest podcast/selection or 'Space Program' as he likes to call it. Ashley, incase you don't know, is one of the original UK acid house veterans and famous the world over for his house, disco and downtempo productions under guises such as Black Science Orchestra, Ballistic Brothers and more famously X-Press 2. He's also an authority on reggae music, as well as a great selector,DJ and producer. Having had the pleasure of DJing with him a couple of times, I can vouch for his true passion, knowledge and skills behind the turntables. So strap yourselves in for a musical journey with the Daddy...

shrlock da madman

«i try to maintain and keep this rap thing true, new york might be dope but richmond brothers got flavor too!»

i couldn't start this one better than with this quote from the featured mc itself. i present to you this record by shrlock da madman on rolling records from '96. some of you might already be aware of this 12". i also featured «for what it was» on my volume 5 mix back in '07. shrlock da madman is from virginia and has nothing to do with sherlock from sweden. i don't know if that's his only record out there- enlighten me if you know more.

i like the whole record, but i stick straight to the last track. also, a full track with the intro beat would have been nice too! keep your eyes open for this one.

Raver (Breakage remix)

We posted a clip of Shy FX's wicked Guiness Punch remix a few weeks back, but Annie Mac has just let off the Breakage remix of this banger over on her website. Upping the rave factor and busting open some good old fashioned Amens, this reminds me of popping Slipmatt & Lime tapes on my walkman on my way to school. Head over to Annie Mac's website to get your hands on a copy.

[hanDJob talks to] dj gerard (reggie capers)

Once again my man hanDJob returns with another interesting interview. this time he talked to dj gerard aka brother black from queens. you should at least know him from the reggie capers releases (four years ago i posted their second 12" on sound plus rhythm).

«hanDJob: To start this, please share some history about the time you got into music, like how it was back then. How it all started.

Dj Gerard: I started DJing at 13 years old, in Lefrak City Queens NY. This was where and when I received my first DJ set, It was BSR TURNTABLES, AND A UP AND DOWN CROSS GEMINI MIXER AND A REALISTIC AMP FROM RADIO SHACK. To this day...»

yep, and you know how we do [at least the leechers out there, who don't read one line we post]! once again we come with some exclusives! dj gerard blessed us with two unreleased reggie capers joints. fellas, they are hot, check the videos below! and to make the package perfect, we also share their '95 debut release «she can't love me». plus i also packed in the suspect 12" again- like that you'll get all 3 releases in this download. dope stuff!

What's more, those kind folk over at Bass music blog are giving it away for free, so grab your slice of the cake here:

RIP The Cool Ruler

Sad news reached us yesterday of the passing of one of reggae's true greats, the inimitable Gregory Isaacs. With tributes and eulogies popping up in every corner of the internet, it felt only right to post something here. I was lucky enough to catch the man perform a number of times, most recently at the Big Chill festival. With a back catalogue as rich as you'd expect from someone who has over 50 years of archive material, his performances were always ones to treasure. My enduring memory of his legacy however is probably his most well known tune. Having ran a monthly event for 7 years, it was a familiar experience to get the old "last tune, mate" off an over-zealous bouncer, eager to get paid and get home. One particular bouncer was a sucker for a bit of reggae, in particular Mr Isaacs himself...so whilst he was ushering the crowd out of the door, I'd always slyly drop "Night Nurse". He could never resist abandoning his post and having a skank on the dancefloor with the remaining stragglers. This happened every night for around 18 months. A fitting tribute to the power of the man's music I feel! As a blog post though, I've opted for a personal favourite (sorry Bayo!)...RIP

Seiji Fix

We're big fan of Seiji over here, ever since his early days on Reinforced to his broken beat bangers (also as part of Bugz In The Attic) he's always been a bit of a musical misfit, operating on the fringes of the mainstream, but always delivering on the dancefloor. Thesedays he's pumping out heavy bassline infused house and what is probably described as "UK Funky". What's more he gives a hell of a lot of it away for free on his website! This particular track "Dope Fix" is a sparse tribal work out, given away at the XLRBR blog, where you can find all manner of free goodness!
