Well technically we're celebrating the release of the new single from the Roots Manuva Meets Wrongtom "Duppy Writer" project "Jah Warriors" which is out now from Big Dada on 7" and digital but while you're waiting for that to show up you can grab a free boot which uses the b-side beat and a vocal from Silvah Bullet's late 90's ragga phase.
So get clicking on the link below and remember to bag yourself a copy of Duppy Writer which hits the shops next Monday.
On the subject of duppies and celebrations we'll also be passing round the tu sheng peng at The Alibi in Dalston on Thursday the 9th to mark the LP release and Sir Roderick Manuva's birthday, it's free entry but limited spaces so get there early for jelly and nice-cream, doors at 8pm.
New music today from The Milk, a band that’s starting to turn a few heads here in London Town. But if you’re not familiar, don’t feel bad. Here’s your chance to get in on the ground floor so you can tell your kids some “I remember when they were just starting out”-type stories.
According to their bio, The Milk embraces “the classic Motown, Stax and Trojan records that had sound tracked their early lives. Yet the band’s plans for their album are anything but retro, instead incorporating elements of dance, hip-hop and dub into their sound.”
What better way to incorporate said genres into your act then call upon a geezer who knows a bit about them all – namely Brad Baloo, he of Nextmen fame. Baloo has been working with The Milk for the last six months, helping the group lay down the foundations for their first LP, which will flow from one track to the next, mix tape style. The guys did this for fun to give away as a tribute to the great Maytals
Bit of a treat on this bank holiday for you from the man like Max Tannone, the same fella behind the Mos Dub album earlier this year. Taking vocals from the other half of Black Star, this time it's Talib Kweli that gets a reggae re-rub of some of his back catalogue. Check it out here! As a bonus ball I'm also posting this version I did of Mr Kweli's "Hot Thing" on the Baddaz riddim featuring a guest verse from Lady Saw. I've been sat on it for a while, so what better time to share?
Just had an email from one of our favourite boutique clothing labels Selector!, who make some rather natty reggae influenced T-shirts and the like. Check out their new range and as a special treat to NICE UP! readers, if you quote the code "TOP RANKING" when ordering you get a 25% discount!
Blank Fasiz is made up of two members, the first being Aftamaf who believes that the music that Blank Fasiz puts out has to have a positive message. The other member is KWE, which stands for knowledge, wisdom, and equality. Blank Fasiz like many other artists have had to struggle, both financially and mentally. They have waited patiently, all the while, honing their craft and gathering knowledge and experiences. That is what makes them the hot-ticket in the hip-hop scene. They have a powerful positive message to give the listeners, and their fans are a loyal, positive following. They feel that the positive message in their lyrics is what makes their music unique. Blank Fasiz goes back to around 1995 when Aftamaf, KWE, and Mike Franco met in Providence. They formed the New Realm Record label, so that they could pursue their dream of positive hip-hop.They felt that the genre has far too much sex and violence in the lyrics, which is a bad influence for the youth. So, they undertook the self appointed position of teaching fans that a more positive type of hip-hop is in the groove. Blank Fasiz has a mission to complete, and we can expect to hear some powerful messages coming out of New Realm Records and Blank Fasiz.
here i have their first two releases from '98 (probably recorded in '97) on new realm records. somehow i never bought their «we came to blaze» ep from '99, which is solid as well. my winners are "mofa", "m.s.e.i.n.a.s." and "hartford park".
Yes, yet more hype for the forthcoming "On A Dubstep Tip" single - this time in video format. Using footage from SL2's time-capsule music video of 1992 (when it was more than acceptable to just get a load of mates to rave infront of camera) and splicing it with another ground-breaking duo of the time, we're sure you'll agree the results are wicked. Got to say BIG UP to my man DJ P for putting the hours in!
In anticipation of his larger-than-large single "On A Dubstep Tip" featuring Dynamite MC and Jah Screechy (forthcoming on youknowwho!), Nottingham's finest up and coming dubstep star Adam Prescott has knocked up this rather special mix. MC GOOGLY - BEATS IN GENERAL - POISON LADD S.L.R. 2x12" LP
Mc Googly – Aka – William Daniels ("The Public Enemy Of Philly") born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa. (North Philly) in 1967, moved to The logan section of Philadelphia in 1980, where he first witnessed hip hop at its finest. We’re talking 2 Turntables and a microphone. Well known Dj’s like Disco Rat, Disco Poo Sex Machine, would be off the hook with performances, with rappers, and rap groups.
His study of the rap game had him rapping at the early age of 13 sounding just as good as the older rappers. In 1983 he met Ronald Potts known then as Mc Rockwell (aka) Poison Ladd at Olney Highschool in Philadelphia where the challenge each other to take there skills to the next level. Shortly after, they met Wayne Rhoads know then as Big which they later named Extortionist B (aka) Beats In General and they formed a group (Boys Of Doom) they produced a sound that still today is ringing in the public ear. They were considered one of the hottest groups in philly at that time, but still no shine in 1984.
In 1987 the Boys Of Doom had to part due to Mc Googly’s incarceration which he did a 2 year sentence. His incarceration helped him perfect his rap skills, Mc Googly returned to the group B.O.D. in 1989 and recorded several solo songs but violated his parole and returned right back to prison until 1992. By then B.O.D. was no more, and Ronald Potts, & Wayne Rhoads became Poison Ladd S.L.R. – Beats In General., so Mc Googly moved on as a solo artist recording various hip hop songs throughout the 90’s. We hope you enjoy the many lost treasures of Mc Googly, One of the illest Mc’s of philly.

As featured on last years Major Lazer album, I can't say I really 'get' Prince Zimboo as such (it's one of Diplo's mates taking the piss right?). Coming off more like Facejacker's Augustus Kwembe than a legit rapper, this cover version of "Juicy" is pure comedy however. Documenting his rise from the African bush to ghetto stardom, I'm sure this could entertain and offend in equal measures depending on where you sit. But as the good Prince says "It taste good wid de gravy!"
New one in from Plymouth's 14th Best DJ and vinyl hoarder extraordinaire, Aldo Vanucci. Teaming up with Featurecast was always going to provide the goods, but throw in Tha Alkaholiks on mic duties and it's a done deal. On top of that, get a remix from Warrior One and we're talking BIG BIG BUSINESS! So big infact that we're only allowed to give away a 192 of it. Check Juno, Fat City and Phonica for vinyl and click here for 320s.
bugseed, a japanese beatmaker from tokyo, contacted me a few weeks ago with a link to his actual instrumental album «bohemian beatnik». i checked it out and it blew me away. i haven't heard so many dope beats coming from one person in a long time. i wrote him back and regretted that i do not have something like an instrumental section on my page, where we could post these beats.
some time passed and i kept bumping those tracks on my ipod on a daily basis. one day i visited his myspace-page and boom...found another load of his beats on soundcloud. the case was clear now- i had to start an instrumental section on crates of ag.
and this is exactly what we are starting doing today!
if you want to know more about bugseed, check out an interview with him on 77e.org. but to quickly sum it up: he is 21 years young, started making beats 2 years ago and uses fruity loops 8. also we can expect a few more ep's this year, including a collaboration with raw stilus.
today, bugseed shares seven tracks with us, which are from his «bohemian beatnik» album and from his soundcloud beats.
now pump up the volume and check out the teaser video!
bugseed - demo ep teaser
so, if you have similar dope beats to share, send 'em over as well. oh, and i also have good news concerning bugseed. he will now work on remixes with vocals for crates of ag. can't wait to hear them!
thank you bugseed! and now show some love in the comments section.
