Dig Deeper

Hospital Records veteran and underground legend Landslide returns to the fray with some new sounds, this time on his own label Round The Houses (big up to Sweeno!). As you would expect, having dabbled in 2-step, drum and bass & broken beat, there is more than a suggestion of bass in his music, the new single having a dubstep twist and featuring the vocals of UK starlet Sabira Jade. With remixes from Throwing Snow & Trwbador in the bag, we're offering up the Vocdub rework for download. Be sure to check the rest out on Monday 2nd May from all the usual outlets!

the prosecution

here's a record i just played at home.

the prosecution from rochester, ny. while «shady» comes with a more mellow touch beatwise (kool and the gang's summer madness sample one more time), «couldn't hang» is the dark part on this 12". nice jeru sample and hardcore rhyming. both tracks produced by g-wreck. it's from '94 on hip hop alley records. not everybody's taste– but i like it!

Day Into Night

Big tune for the summer dropping next monday on BBE records and from an artist we haven't heard from in a while. Australia's Katalyst has dropped more than his share of niceness in the past - mainly on the beats/downtempo sort of tip (infact I'm sure I remember a quote calling him Oz's answer to DJ Shadow), but he's produced a fair few bangers along the way too. One thing I don't remember him doing is fat, soulful, funky reggae...and it's an instant mystery why!?! Featuring one of our favourite reggae/soul songstresses Stephanie McKay, the song is a reworking of the classic "No Place Like Home" by Desmond Dekker, very reminiscent of her classic "Take Me Over" which of course, was on top of another JA classic. Check out the soundcloud player below and head to the usual places to buy on Monday 18th.

Dub Zealand CD storming away!

A massive thanks to all those supporting the Dub Zealand compilation launched earlier this month. While it has been slowly creeping up charts at Beatport and Juno, Jstar is donating all his share (which aint much so a hard nudge to the ribs and he's more than doubled it) over to the Christchurch Earthquake fund..

While managing to hold down a job and influential website, those cheeky guys at Monkeyboxing have given us a great review, and continue to recommend some great music on a weekly basis - check it out here!

Just in from our friends over at The Heatwave is this fantastic tribute to Smiley Culture from UK dons YT and Mr Williamz. The lyrics sum up the situation perfectly, on top of the classic Bobby Babylon riddim, making this an essential play at any dance in the foreseeable future.

Rolling In The Dub

OK, so after our little April Fools gag we thought we better come correct with a proper giveaway, this time with one of my own tunes. Not as much hype on this one to be fair, but its something that had caused much reaction when I've played it out over the last couple of months. Inspired by Jamie XX's bashment-esque remix, I thought Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" vocal would sound even better over some classic dancehall, so fired up the timeless Bam Bam riddim and got busy. This was originally given away in the monthly NICE UP! newsletter, so if you want to be the first to receive such treats in the future, make sure you sign up here.

Welcome To The Jungle

Back in the early 90's, whilst I was at college and holding down my (*rudeboy*) Saturday job at Woolworths in Basingstoke (*shots fired*), I used to spend a LOT of time loitering around in Sight, Sound & Motion Records - a small independent record shop run by Marvellous Cain, that sold Jungle, a bit of Hip Hop, a bit of New Jack Swing and nothing else.

Occasionally I'd jump behind the counter and shot a few DJ Hype mixtapes, but mostly I just used to watch this geezer do his thing. Legend in the game and the first guy that ever let me touch a Technics 1210. For that alone, he's got my lifelong respect.

This is a taste of how he used to do, and still does..

Sicko Cell

It's the one everyone has been waiting for...

Since doing the rounds earlier in the year and championed by the likes of Oneman, Ramadanman & Benji B, never has such a tune caused such a stir. Cloaked in mystery, the blogs have been buzzing with low quality rips and talk of who the actual producer is. Many believe it to be the work of Joy Orbison, whilst others are citing Boddika or perhaps even Swamp 81 boss himself Loafah. Regardless of who made it, you can be sure to be hearing it everywhere for the rest of the year! Cop it below in full 320.
